Arthur John Brown was born on 20th April 1879 in Fordham, baptised in Fordham on 6th June 1886, the son of William James and Martha BROWN (née WHEELER)
1881 census...Aged 1, he was in Carter Street, Fordham with his father William BROWN [38] cab driver; his mother Martha [33], brother Frederick [12]; sisters Eliza [7], Georgiana [6] and Clara Helen [4]. They were all born in Fordham. 1891 census...Aged 11, he was a visitor at the Horse and Groom, Newmarket. His parents, sister Annie (Georgiana) and Clara, together with brother Bertie [9] and sisters Maud [7], Bessie [5] and Edith M [1] were still at Carter Street, Fordham. All the newcomers were born in Fordham 1843 1899, he appears to be Arthur Archer BROWN when marrying Lucy Elizabeth WHEATLEY [28-11-1880] in 1899 in Croydon. The worry here is possible confusion with A A Brown on the memorial BUT Arthur John's widow was Lucy Elizabeth 1901 census...He has not yet been found in this census. His parents were still at Carter Street, Fordham with sister Maud, Bessie and Muriel (Edith M ?) and a new brother, Charlie [7] born in Fordham. 1911 census...Aged 31, a potman at the "Kentish Drovers, High Street, Peckham, he was at 48 Pitt Street, Peckham with his wife Lucy [30] born Croydon and son Arthur Edwin [10] born London (3rd qtr 1900 Croydon 2a:278). His widower father was still in Carter Street, Fordham. His mother died Q1-1911 in Fordham. CWGC have his widow's address as 105, Glenghall Road, Peckham. The pension card has his widow as Lucy Elizabet DAWES, of 10a Surrey Road, Peckham Rye. Their son Arthur Edwin would be too old to be considered in pensions. His widow married Henry DAWES in Camberwell in 1918 |

He enlisted in Camberwell whilst resident in Peckham. The 21st Manchesters were involved in the attack at Bullecourt on 11th May 1917 when they lost 31 men killed, only one has an identified grave.
